Where Did I Put My Keys? And My Train of Thought? A Guide to Graceful Aging

Hello again my friends. Have you noticed a certain… hesitation lately? A momentary blank when someone speaks, or a struggle to tally a simple sum that once flowed effortlessly? Perhaps a disconcerting reliance on that little map application, even for familiar routes? Rest assured, you are not alone. These little slips, they visit us all, and while some may linger, I firmly believe we can regain much of our sharpness with a bit of mindful engagement.

Now, if you've transitioned to a quieter phase of life, aka retirement, the daily mental calisthenics of boardroom banter and dense reports have likely faded. We're no longer pressured to synthesize complex data or navigate the delicate art of office diplomacy. However, this shift necessitates a conscious effort to maintain our cognitive agility.

The beauty of this chapter is that We set the pace. No deadlines, no demanding colleagues, just the joy of stimulating our minds on our own terms.

Many of my contemporaries find solace and stimulation in the classic pursuits of Sudoku and crosswords. Others engage with online strategy games. Personally, I find a rather peculiar delight in "Bubble Shooter." It requires a certain strategic foresight, a visual acuity, and a touch of reward in … well, let's call it "bubble-popping ROI," shall we? And of course, a large jigsaw puzzle spread across the dining table is a delightful challenge for the entire family.

My own mom, in her later years, discovered a passion for oil painting. She decided to take her extra time and take oil painting classes.  It was a testament to her enduring curiosity, and her canvases now serve as cherished reminders of her indefatigable spirit.

So, I implore you, find your own intellectual diversion. A puzzle, a game, a new hobby – anything that engages your mind. The key is to challenge ourselves, but to do so with intention and, most importantly, with joy.
